You couldn’t study for a test, without knowing what’s going to be covered… right? I mean, you have to at least know the topic, or the chapters in order to know what to study, so why do you suppose you will be successful without know what success looks like?
First of all, just thinking, that success will be a pile of money in your bank account doesn’t cut it… because, all banks already have a pile of money. (ha ha ha see what I did there?) Actually, my point is.. money is not success, what you do with the money… why you want the money is really your picture of success.
Do you want that pile of money so that every morning you can get the kids off to school, then go back to bed for a few hours?
Do you want that pile of money so you won’t have to worry about paying your bills?
Do you want that pile of money so you can take your loved ones on that most fantastic vacation?
If you answered yes to any of those, then you need to sit down and really put together your picture of success.
My vision of success is (queue dream sequence) –When I am financially free so that my time is my own, I can schedule my hours around spending time with my family and friends. I don’t have to rush the kids to the bus, so I can rush to 8 hours of sitting behind a desk, so I can rush home and make dinner, so I can get everyone in bed to start it over. I want joy and happiness.
For me, I won’t achieve that level of success being an employee. I’ve made other decisions.
I have a friend, however, who’s vision of success would never include owning her own business. Her vision of success is ultimately getting a good job close to home so that she doesn’t have to drive so far to get to work and ultimately will have more time to spend with her friends and family.
Can you see how different our visions are?
In my vision I want to retire from the 9-5 working world and still have the financial means to life a wonderful fulfilling life… in her vision, she wants to continue working but more on her own terms so that she will have the constant paycheck, no headaches of owning a business and be closer to home so she has more time.
While we both want more time, we both have a completely different opinion of how we want to get it… and how much time we want.
Having a clear picture of what your success will look like, is a great tool to help you work towards your success. You will be able to measure how much further you have to go… along with how quickly you can get there.
So, my point is … take the time to really put together your personal picture of success. When you have that picture, you can refer back to it… You can get emotionally motivated by it.. You can do it!
