Just a quick note today…. On expecting miracles.
Yesterday morning we were all late getting out of the house… My 10 year old had resorted to crying because she was tired and didn’t want to be rushed out of the house. My 9 year old was crying because she didn’t like the way that her socks felt in her sneakers. I was simply concentrating on the clock; on the time and my early morning appointment.
To delay us more, I had to return to the house to pick up the thing I had made a mental note I wouldn’t forget but forgot anyway… I remember making a concerted effort to keep positive and not add to the negative energy filling my mini-van like a sinking ship.
We left my house AGAIN and pulled up to the top of the hill where we could oversee the lake that sits in the center of my community; and … there was a tall blue heron. Literally, directly in front of us across the street by the waters edge.
She stood there her silhouette like a National Geographic prize winning photo. While we sat and watched, she elegantly walked to the side and down the rocks to the lake.
We pulled up and parked. The kids and I were entranced. They said, “Mom, aren’t we late” and I said, “This is really special, we should pay attention and enjoy this close up view, because this may not happen again”
We got out of our car and we stood within 15 feet of this gorgeous elegant bird and watched for 5 more minutes as she walked around, stretched her wings and surveyed the lake.
This was a beautiful reminder that each moment we have an opportunity for a miracle… but we need to be paying attention and we need to be open to experiencing it.
My kids and I got back in the car and the atmosphere was completely different. We talked about the bird. We talked about a lot of things. We were all much more calm and accepting and thankful. It was nice.
